"Westella" Caught Inside Fishery Limits - The large Anglo-Dutch pelagic trawler, "Westella", was caught by the "Saint Piran" in September last year fishing for horse mackerel (scad) within the six mile limit near the Wolf Rock. This vessel, at 86.32 metres and 2.685 kilowatts, was considerably outside the limits set by this Committee's Trawling Byelaw. The skipper pleaded guilty by letter and his generally helpful attitude during the interviewing process was taken into consideration by the Magistrates who reduced the fine to a sum of £2500 plus £642.50 costs, the maximum penalty under the regulations being £5,000.

Members expressed concern that the low level of this fine would not act as sufficient deterrent to other potential offenders. In response, the Chief Fishery Officer agreed that fines were, on occasions, unrealistically low when considering the adverse impact on the stocks and that he was proposing to speak to Magistrates in the County to apprise them of the effects of such offences.

ABERDEEN COASTGUARD COORDINATE SEARCH FOR MAN OVERBOARD OFF ABERDEEN

Aberdeen Coastguard were alerted at 6pm this evening by the fishing vessel “WESTELLA” reporting that they had lost a man overboard about 12 miles East of Aberdeen. The man was last seen about half an hour before the alarm was raised and the WESTELLA has retraced their route to search for the crew member.

Aberdeen Coastguard tasked Aberdeen and Stonehaven lifeboats, the rescue helicopter from RAF Lossiemouth and several other vessels in the area and these are all now on scene to search. A vessel at the scene had reported seeing the person in the water but lost sight of the casualty while turning back to assist. The helicopter and other vessels are now searching this area where the sighting was made.

The casualty is a 23 year old male wearing just a T shirt and shorts. Conditions at the scene are favourable and there is sufficient light for a visual search but there is clearly urgency to find the casualty before darkness tonight. The search is continuing tonight with all the available resources. The WESTELLA is an 86 metre stern trawler from Hull.
