HULL STEAM & SIDEWINDER VESSELS INDEXES

GOZO H545

The name sidewinder was used collectively for this type of vessel because of the way it fished and not by its means of propulsion, ( Lowering the nets over the side) . Initially the first of these vessels were Steam vessels fuelled by coal, in latter years both diesel and diesel electric sidewinders would join the Hull fleet. The Gozo H545 seen here built in 1902 is a typical steam sidewinder of the day.

In 1885 the first purpose built steam trawlers started to enter the Hull fishing fleet. The first was that of the Irrawaddy H1479. Prior to the first purpose built steam trawler entering the Hull Fleet, Steam vessels had been used for several years as carriers, such as those built by Earle`s shipyard of Hull. The steam carriers would meet the fishing fleets at sea and collect the catches of each of the fishing smacks or steam vessels on the fishing ground each day. Each Fleet would have its own carriers which would collect the fish and transport it to either Hull or London as soon as possible to keep the catches fresh. The carriers were also equipped with nets and at times would also fish to supplement their incomes.

The following Indexes are not a complete listing of all Hull vessels and are a constant work in progress, as vessel data is added.

Some of the vessels carry other port registration numbers, this is where the vessel has been identified as fishing from Hull or owned by a Hull Owner.
