GOULD CHARLES . SMACK SNOWDROP H511 . Temp Skipper 22 Aug 1874 Charged with assaulting apprentice - 2 months imprisonment with hard labour.
22 Aug 1874: Charles Gould temporary skipper of the smack Snowdrop, was summoned by Henry Wright, at the Hull Police Court, on Wednesday for assaulting him on the 25th ult. It was stated that the accused got drunk at Brocklesby, and on returning to the smack struck the complainant in the chest, cut a piece out of his arm with a belt, beat him about the head with a poker, stuck a fork into his thigh rubbed salt and saltpetre into the wound, and ended by throwing him overboard. He was rescued by the second hand jumped overboard after him, and saved him, getting him on board again. It appeared that the lad bore a very bad character. Prisoner, said he remembered nothing of what happened as he was drunk or he should not have behaved as he did, his master who usually took the vessel to sea himself, appeared and gave him a bad character. Prisoner was sentenced to two months hard labour.
