HULL PACKET: 23 June 1891 GALLANT RESCUE IN THE NORTH SEA : BRAVERY OF HULL FISHERMEN

Suitable Recognition. On Monday, at the offices of the Local Marine Board, Mr W.A.Massey presented to Mr Samuel Winsor, late skipper of the fishing smack Iris, of Hull, on behalf of the Board, a handsome gold watch bearing the Imperial Arms, received through the Marine Department of the Board of Trade from the German Government, in recognition of his services in rescuing the shipwrecked crew of the barque Paladin, of Swinemunde, in October last.  Mr Massey in presenting the same, expressed his regret that Mr Winsor`s time in port would not permit of the presentation being made by the Lord Mayor of Hull in the Town Hall in the usual way, and the great pleasure it afforded him in undertaking the duty. He congratulated him on receiving the same, trusting that it would prove an incentive to others to act in a similar manner should they have the opportunity of so doing.   Mr Winsor, in reply, said although expecting no reward for services rendered, he thanked Mr Massey for making the presentation, and also the German Consu at this port for having represented the same to the German Government who had so generously rewarded him, and the proceedings terminated. The German Government have also awarded the sum of £5 each to two of the Iris, named John Agnes and George Eddoms, who manned the boat at the rescue in connection with Mr Winsor. The following is a brief account of the services rendered:  About the 1st October last, whilst in the North Sea, about 220 miles from Spurn, vessel lying to, about 5 p.m, noticed a barque to windward of us, under bare poles, and flying signals of distress. At once put our vessel about, and went to her, and found the vessel  to be the German barque Paladin, waterlogged and pumps choked. Launched our boat and took off her crew, ten in number, the boat making two trips to the vessel, on the second of which she was nearly swamped by the heavy seas. Owing to the darkness they had great difficulty in again finding the rescuing vessel. It was blowing very hard at the time, with a dangerous sea. Landed the rescued men at Hull on the following Wednesday, having had them on board for about six days.

Additional Information

John Charles Eddom ( Jack ) Born 9 Eton St, Hull on 13 May 1917 three days previous to his birth Johns, father George William Eddom was killed instantly when the Hull Trawler Windward Ho H692 hit a mine off Peterhead. His mother would be left with the devastation of losing her husband and the prospect of bringing her newborn son into the world. Times where hard enough with the war, but would be an even greater struggle for the mother of John who also had seven other siblings to bring up. Been from a seafaring family and his own father been a Hull trawlerman for many years, it was a natural progression for Jack to go to sea.

At the age of 14 he started a lengthy career in the fishing fleets of both Hull and Grimsby starting off as a stoker, he is seen in the photograph left at an early age aboard one of the Kingston vessels of Hull. - Early 1930`s

Jack stayed with the Hull fleet taking his engineers certificate and becoming a Second Engineer untill the outbreak of WW II where in 1940 he enlisted into the RNR and joined the Minesweeping Group at Grimsby, he sailed on many vessels including the Sea Mist , Mousa, Grayling, Barry Castle and Calverton, he also saw service at Normandy. After war service in 1946 Jack returned to trawling. But after meeting a Grimsby Girl during his war service he moved to the South Bank and married his sweetheart settling and sailing from Grimsby. Jack had two sons who did not enter careers as seamen, Jack Sadly died in 1987.

John Charles Eddom at rear lent over the other two men aboard the Calverton.
