TONY EAST

TONY EAST

Another pupil of the Boulevard Nautical School

Tony was born into a well established fishing family from Grants Terrace Scarborough St, Hessle Rd Hull. His father was George Henry East who was said to be named after George Henry Smith, Who is remembered on the memorial statue on the Boulevard. On his fathers side tony`s uncles were mostly fishermen, there was Robinson East ( Bob ) a skipper with Lord Line, Frank East ( Bunk ) who was the sole survivor of the ROCHESTER after she was sunk by a mine off the Humber 27 July 1944 and there was also Tunny East and Harry East. On his mothers side was the Day family again prominent in the fishing community mostly been engineers, although Martin Day was ship runner for Boston deep Sea Fisheries and his sons Harry & Terry were also fishermen, Terry was with with Bostons and tragically lost his life on Christmas day 1973 when the Ian Flemming was grounded.

After been evacuated to Scarborough during the war Tony would return to his Hull home in 1947, with so much salt water in his blood it would not be long before the call of the sea would take Tony on a pleasure trip with Skipper Bob East aboard the Lord Hotham in 1950.

After moving back to Hull after the war the East family moved to Anlaby Common where Tony and his sister would attend St. Wilfreds School, Saner St. Tony after later attending the Boulevard Nautical School, respecting his fathers wishes that he did not want him to follow in his footsteps, Tony embarked on a Tramp Ship in the MN. But aged 20 the call to fishing was too great and in 1958 Tony boarded the Starella as a Deckie Learner, his father been the skipper, this was the start of a 7 year career fishing with the Hull firms of Marr and Boston`s. In 1965 Tony moved to Ranger Fishing. Tony then settled in Scarborough returning to his war time retreat and became a inshore fisherman, he now lives in Perth Australia.
